Now that autumn has set in there is no better way to celebrate the damp, drizzly walks to and from work with Sheffield’s very own song-smith Richard Hawley.

Back in the 90′s, Hawley played guitar in bands like the Longpigs and Pulp, but now he is centre stage with his brand of  smoky voiced, whisky-soaked laments.

There’s something inspiring about the way Hawley manages to make normal things terraced houses, street lamps or the ocean lyrically romantic.  He looks like Eddie Cochran and Buddy Holly, his baratone voice remind me of Jim Reeves or Johnny Cash, and his echo-laden tremolo guitars remind me f the Everly Brothers and some of those classic, early Sun Records.

You won’t find this guy at the forefront of the charts, next to Lady GaGa,  but his music will long endure past most of the current chart ‘hits’!

Hawley has released 7 albums to date, Truelove’s Gutter and Coles Corner are by far the best, but I still really love Lowedges. And being from Sheffield, I love how his albums seem to be named after places I regularly go to or drive through.

If you have never heard of Richard Hawley, you have some serious repentance to do!

You can now listen to Christus Victor in full online by visiting http://nicklaw.bandcamp.com.

One of my hopes for this album is that these songs will be used in churches to bless congregations, teach the deep truths of the faith and help people to encounter the living God through worship.

I think, often, Christians who make music are behind the times of the music industry in general, so it makes sense – in a world where music is so viral – that the message of the Gospel should be equally as viral  through the medium of music in a way that is culturally accessable.

So, short of Christus Victor going on to Spotify (which may happen in due course), I’ve decided to let you folks listen to it’s entirity online.

If you like the album, please support my ministry and download a copy of the album for a mere £5 from Bandcamp or Resound Media.
